"Offensive": Supreme Court Stays Release Of Movie 'Humare Baarah', Plea Says Derogatory To Islam And Muslim Women

The release of the movie Humare Baarah was stayed by the Supreme Court on Thursday (13 June) after a plea argued that the film was derogatory to Islam and Muslim women.

Earlier, the Bombay High Court had refused to stay the release of the film. The Supreme Court has now asked to dispose of the plea expeditiously after hearing the plea on merits.

The movie was slated to be released tomorrow. However, the bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta considered the teaser of the movie "offensive".

In the High Court, it was argued earlier that movie shows that a married Muslim women has no independent rights as per a verse in the Quran, however, that verse has been misread.

The High Court then asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to form a committee of three individuals including a Muslim to review the movie, Bar and Bench reported.

However, later, the release of the movie was allowed when the producers agreed to delete some dialogue. The Supreme Court noted today that the deletions were not enough.
