The Maharashtra government has announced plans to cancel over 42,000 fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state by 15 August, reported The Indian Express.

State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, addressing the media in Mumbai on Wednesday (30 July), revealed that the number could increase as verification efforts continue.

“By 15 August, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis staying illegally in the state will be cancelled,” Bawankule said.

He added that the revenue and health departments have been instructed to coordinate in the verification and cancellation process.

Bawankule also conducted a video conference with the state Chief Secretary to review the progress of the exercise.

In March, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam informed the Maharashtra Assembly that the government had intensified its action against illegal immigrants over the past four years.

Official records show that the state deported 109 Bangladeshi nationals in 2021, 77 in 2022, and 127 in 2023. So far in 2024, authorities have arrested 716 and deported 202 Bangladeshis.

Additionally, by March 2024, the state had taken action against 600 more Bangladeshi nationals found to be living illegally in Maharashtra.
