Parliament's Monsoon Session Set to Begin Today Amid Opposition Uproar — Here's What To Know

The first parliament session after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is set to begin today (24 June). It will have eight sittings and will conclude on 3 July.

However, since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is no longer in majority now, the Opposition will exert pressure on the Narendra Modi government.

Even before the start of the Monsoon session, the Opposition has already started targeting the government over the selection of Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro tem speaker.

Moreover, the controversies surrounding the National Testing Agency (NTA), especially the cancelation of UGC-NET a day after the conduct of the exam and the paper leak allegations against the NEET-UG exam, will disrupt the parliament.

Another issue that is likely to be raised by the Opposition is the relocation of statues of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B R Ambedkar within the Parliament building complex.

In the first two days of the session, the newly elected members will take the oath. On Wednesday, the new Speaker will be elected.

On 27 June, President Droupadi Murmu will address the join sitting of the Parliament, followed by separate discussions in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha till 3 July.
