PM Modi Pays Tribute To Jayaprakash Narayan On Birth Anniversary, Recalls His Fight Against Emergency

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (11 October) paid tribute to stalwart Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) on his birth anniversary, hailing him as a "tireless champion for democracy and social justice."

PM Modi highlighted JP’s "Sampoorna Kranti" movement, describing it as a societal initiative envisioning a nation built on equality, ethics, and good governance, reported The Times Of India.

"On his birth anniversary, paying homage to Loknayak JP, one of India’s most fearless voices of conscience and a tireless champion for democracy and social justice," PM Modi wrote on X.

He noted that JP’s numerous mass movements "led to a socio-political awakening across India" and shook the then-Congress government at the Centre.

PM Modi criticised the Congress for imposing the Emergency in 1975, during which JP was forcibly arrested.

Sharing excerpts from JP’s Prison Diary, PM Modi emphasised the leader’s resilience.

His Prison Diary documented his anguish and unbroken faith in democratic ideals.

JP’s leadership galvanised widespread protests, strikes, and demonstrations, mobilising students, workers, and citizens to demand civil liberties, press freedom, and democratic institutions.

JP’s efforts created significant political and moral momentum that challenged authoritarian rule.

After the Emergency’s withdrawal in 1977, his movement laid the foundation for the Janata Party’s victory, marking the end of Congress’s uninterrupted rule.
