PM Modi
On Mahavir Jayanti (21 April), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvana Mahotsav at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital.
He also unveiled a commemorative stamp and coin during the event as per a report by Hindustan Times.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi remarked that the inauguration marked the beginning of the 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Lord Mahavira.
He stated, “Bharat Mandapam today witnesses the beginning of the 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Lord Mahavira… I extend my wishes to the people of the country on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. To be part of such a program during the hustle and bustle of elections is comforting."
PM Modi emphasised India's rich cultural heritage and its role as a safe haven for humanity.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi took to social media to greet the nation on Mahavir Jayanti, noting that Lord Mahavir's message of peace, restraint, and harmony serves as an inspiration for building a developed India.
Mahavir Jayanti is the birth anniversary of the founder of Jainism, Mahavira, which is celebrated by the Jain community to promote peace and harmony, and spread his teachings.
The festival falls on the 13th day of the Chaitra month in the Jain calendar, which this year corresponds to 21 April.
The celebrations include processions with Mahavir's idol, recitation of religious songs, charity, fasting, temple visits, prayers, and meditation, along with consuming sattvik food.
