Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two key stretches of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) on Monday (11 March).
These stretches, built at a cost of Rs 1,438 crore and Rs 1,317 crore respectively, aim to alleviate traffic congestion in the tech capital as per a report by Moneycontrol.
The Dobbaspet–Doddaballapur bypass section of NH-648 spans 42 km, while the Doddaballapur bypass–Hoskote section covers 37.6 km.
The STRR, stretching 288 km (NH 948A), is expected to ease traffic in Bengaluru by providing a bypass route for goods vehicles, reducing congestion in the city center.
NHAI officials overseeing the Rs 17,000-crore project have stated that toll collection for the Doddaballapur bypass–Hoskote section commenced in November 2023, with toll collection for the Dobbaspet–Doddaballapur section to follow soon.
The STRR will serve as an alternative route to Kempegowda International Airport for commuters from Hoskote, Kolar, Chittoor, and Hosur. Although westside sections of the STRR are still in the tendering stage, the project is expected to benefit commuters along its route.
PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in June 2022, and it is being executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
Spanning Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the STRR will be a four to six-lane access-controlled expressway, connecting 12 satellite towns. Currently divided into nine sections, construction is underway in four, while contracts for the remaining sections are yet to be awarded.
NHAI officials anticipate a 20-25 percent reduction in congestion at Hebbal due to the completion of the Dobbaspet-Devanahalli-Hoskote section.
The STRR is expected to facilitate smoother transportation for trucks bound for destinations like Kolar, Nelamangala, and Hassan.
Moreover, the STRR is projected to reduce travel time between Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru and locations such as Mysuru and Kodagu.
It will also enhance connectivity with the proposed multi-modal logistics park at Dobbaspet and the upcoming Bengaluru-Pune greenfield expressway, as well as improve connectivity with Chennai Port and Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh.
