Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on Thursday (9 January) in Bhubaneswar, emphasising India’s growing stature on the global stage over the last decade.

The Prime Minister also visited four exhibitions and promotional stalls organized by various ministries and departments of the Centre and states, highlighting India’s developmental strides.

During the inaugural address, PM Modi drew a historical parallel by recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India on this day in 1915.

“In just a few days, the Mahakumbh will begin in Prayagraj. The festivals of Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu are also approaching. There is a joyful atmosphere everywhere. For us, it was on this day in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi returned to India after a long time abroad,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister lauded India’s economic progress and poverty alleviation efforts.

Highlighting the global recognition of India’s skilled youth and rapid development, PM Modi added, “India’s rapid skill and economic development is being noticed around the world. The world today listens to India, which not only presents its own views but those of the global south.”

He further stressed India’s democratic ethos, stating, “We are not only the mother of democracy, but democracy is part of our lives.”

The three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, jointly organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and the BJP government in Odisha, is themed ‘Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.’

Held in different cities since 2015, the event celebrates India’s diversity and regional progress while showcasing its global ambitions.
