Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Mizoram next month and inaugurate the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line and the newly constructed Sairang (Sihhmui) railway station, announced Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday (22 August), reported The Times Of India.

This will bring Aizawl onto the national rail map as the fourth northeastern state capital with railway connectivity.

At the Mizoram Police Service Association conference in Aizawl, Lalduhoma stated that the Prime Minister will spend the night in the city on 12 September before presiding over the inauguration at Sairang station on 13 September.

He mentioned his ongoing coordination with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the event.

“The state govt is making elaborate preparations. Sairang is being developed into a world-class station, with plans to introduce Rajdhani Express services from the outskirts of Aizawl,” Lalduhoma was quoted as saying by ToI.

Earlier on 10 June, the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northeast Frontier Circle—Sumeet Singhal—conducted a safety inspection of the project, followed by a successful speed trial using a diesel-hauled inspection train.

The tunnels span 12,853 meters, and the bridge number 196 rises to 104 meters—42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar.

The line also includes five road overbridges and six road underbridges, and divides into four segments: Bairabi to Hortoki, Hortoki to Kawnpui, Kawnpui to Mualkhang, and Mualkhang to Sairang.

Northeast Frontier Railways developed the project at an estimated cost of Rs 8,215 crore.

NFR officials emphasised that the new rail link will lower transportation costs, enhance passenger mobility, and stimulate trade, tourism, and employment—thereby accelerating the socio-economic growth of Mizoram and the broader northeastern region.
