The Central Government has cleared Rs 436.18 crore for the construction of a 3.877 km elevated corridor and grade separator connecting Indira Gandhi Square with Rajiv Gandhi Square along NH-66 (New NH-32), Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed via a post on X.
The upcoming four-lane facility will be developed entirely within the existing Right of Way (ROW) and will include a 1.821 km elevated structure on NH-32.
Ramps will provide direct access towards Villupuram (NH-332), Tindivanam (NH-32) and the city bus stand, ensuring seamless travel across multiple routes.
The project is expected to decongest one of the busiest arterial roads of Puducherry by diverting through-traffic moving between Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Tindivanam, Villupuram and Cuddalore.
Once complete, it will significantly reduce travel time, improve overall connectivity, and smoothen traffic flow on NH-32 and adjoining highways.
Beyond easing congestion, the corridor has been designed with an emphasis on road safety.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had also recently approved the construction of a 46 km four-lane stretch on NH-332A between Marakkanam and Puducherry in Tamil Nadu.
Currently, travel between Chennai, Puducherry, Viluppuram, and Nagapattinam relies on a two-lane NH-332A and adjoining state highways.
The new alignment will seamlessly connect major National Highways (NH-32, NH-332) and State Highways (SH-136, SH-203), significantly improving accessibility to logistics hubs, economic centres, and key urban nodes.
