With the Union Cabinet approving Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, authorities have also announced the addition of 15 new trains and 45 coaches to the city’s metro fleet.

Pune Metro’s official X (formerly Twitter) account confirmed on Saturday (28 June) that the expanded fleet will cater to the rising number of daily commuters.

"Seeing the growing response to Pune Metro and the increasing number of passengers, 15 new trains and 45 additional coaches will soon be added to the metro fleet. This decision has been made in view of the approval of new metro routes and the increasing crowd in the metro," Pune Metro Rail said.

This follows the Union Cabinet’s clearance of two elevated corridors few days ago under Phase 2—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, stretching 12.75 km and featuring 13 stations.

The project will be executed at a cost of Rs 3,626 crore.

The extensions are expected to serve key IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential pockets, enhancing ridership across the network.

Projections show that daily ridership is expected to grow from 0.96 lakh in 2027 to 3.49 lakh by 2057, prompting the pre-emptive addition of new trains to accommodate the increasing demand in future.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited will oversee the project’s execution, with pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and design consultancy already underway.

Officials say the new corridors will ease congestion on arterial routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road, providing safer and greener mobility options for Pune’s burgeoning population.
