Maharashtra's Minister of State (MoS) for Urban Development and Transport, Madhuri Misal, has proposed a new Metro station in Sahakarnagar-Bibvewadi along the Swargate-Katraj underground Metro corridor in Pune.

The 5.5-km stretch, which is an extension of the fully operational PCMC-Swargate Metro route, has yet to see groundwork commence.

During a meeting on Monday (20 January) with Metro officials, Misal reviewed the progress of the Swargate-Katraj route and urged authorities to study the feasibility of adding a station in Sahakarnagar to benefit residents of Sahakarnagar-Bibvewadi.

This follows a similar proposal for a station at Balajinagar made a few months ago.

The original Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Swargate-Katraj route includes three stations—Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj.

Misal said that the proposal for two more stations has been tabled in favour of the people.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) will now assess the feasibility of these additional stations.

The Swargate-Katraj Metro route has received necessary approvals from both the state and central governments.

Misal highlighted her commitment to enhancing Pune's public transport infrastructure.

She stated that ‘transport mapping’ surveys for Pune city had been taken up by her as transport minister, with a focus on strengthening public transport, ensuring faster execution of Metro projects, establishing coordination between Metro-PMPML-autorickshaw services, and providing information on these services on a common platform.

She also mentioned that the Swargate Metro station will connect directly to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus terminus, facilitating seamless transitions between the two services.

Similarly, Shivajinagar Metro station will link to MSRTC's Shivajinagar bus terminus, with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) being finalised between MSRTC and Maha Metro for the construction of the terminus.

Misal further added that the state government is awaiting central approval for two new Metro projects—Vanaz-Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi-Wagholi—which have been placed before the Union Cabinet.

The Swargate-Katraj extension, approved in 2021 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,945 crore, initially included three stations—Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj.

However, following public demand, a fourth station at Balajinagar was recently added with approval from the civic body.
