Defence Minister Rajnath Singh with his Chinese counterpart
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Qingdao.
During the meeting, Singh proposed a four-point roadmap aimed at reducing border tensions and improving diplomatic relations between India and China.
According to a report by India Today , the four-point plan includes adherence to the 2024 disengagement agreement, sustained de-escalation efforts, accelerated efforts to achieve the goal of demarcation and delimitation at the borders, and the usage of the existing special representative level mechanism to prepare new processes to manage differences and improve relations.
Singh also raised the issue of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and underscored that Operation Sindoor now reflects India’s “principled position” on the matter.
He expressed satisfaction at the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a six-year hiatus.
As a gesture of goodwill, Singh presented a traditional Madhubani painting from Bihar to Admiral Dong.
The talks came shortly after Singh declined to sign an SCO declaration that omitted references to the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, allegedly carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists.
India-China relations have seen renewed engagement since the 2024 de-escalation and PM Modi’s meeting with Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit in Russia.
