Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri with Chinese Counterpart Wang Yi
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, on an official visit to Beijing, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday (27 January), as part of efforts to strengthen India-China relations, reported The Hindu.
The visit forms part of the ‘Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism,’ aimed at addressing key issues in the political, economic, and people-to-people domains of bilateral ties.
During their meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed the importance of enhanced cooperation, urging both countries to “explore more substantial measures to promote mutual understanding and support," as per The Hindu.
He also emphasised that India and China should “refrain from mutual suspicion, mutual estrangement, and mutual exhaustion,” as reported by CGTN, the English news outlet of the Global Times.
Foreign Secretary Misri, in response, highlighted the positive developments in recent bilateral engagements, noting that both nations “have engaged in a series of beneficial dialogues and communications, properly managed and resolved differences, and promoted the resumption of practical cooperation in various fields.”
Arriving in Beijing on Sunday, (26 January), for a two-day visit, Misri also met Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China.
Discussions with Liu focused on implementing the “important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries,” advancing dialogues, and ensuring the “healthy and stable development” of bilateral relations.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international matters of shared interest, according to the Global Times.
The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement dated 23 January, described Misri’s visit as part of the resumption of the bilateral mechanism agreed upon at the leadership level. This mechanism aims to outline the next steps in India-China relations, fostering progress across various domains.
