News Brief
Delhi CM-elect Rekha Gupta
Rekha Gupta, the BJP’s Chief Minister-elect of Delhi, is set to take the oath of office today (20 February) with six cabinet ministers, India Today reported.
The party, marking its return to power in the capital after around 27 years, has planned a grand swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Maidan.
The high-profile event will see the presence of Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from 20 states, along with BJP leaders and workers who played a role in the party’s Delhi election campaign.
Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was chosen as the BJP’s leader in the Delhi Assembly 11 days after the election results.
The party officially named her as the legislature party leader on Wednesday evening.
Gupta’s cabinet will include six ministers: Manjinder Sirsa, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Parvesh Verma.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had won 62 seats in 2020, was reduced to just 22.
AAP’s decade-long rule in Delhi ended amid serious corruption allegations against its leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Rekha Gupta will be the fourth woman to hold the Chief Minister’s post in Delhi, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
Gupta won the Shalimar Bagh seat with a decisive victory over AAP’s Bandana Kumari and Congress’s Parveen Kumar Jain, winning by a margin of 29,595 votes.
