Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the 91.35 km-long Gorakhpur Link Expressway on Friday (20 June), enhancing connectivity across Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The expressway will link Gorakhpur to several districts including Azamgarh, boosting travel efficiency and regional development.

Built under the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the expressway spans 91.35 kilometres and has been constructed at a cost of Rs 7,283.28 crore.

It begins near Jaitpur on National Highway 27 in Gorakhpur and connects with the Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur in Azamgarh.

"The double engine government of the BJP is working to fulfil the goal of 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047...Uttar Pradesh has now made its reputation as a state with expressways from a 'Bimaru' state...Eight years ago, people were afraid to take the name of Azamgarh, UP...Azamgarh has now joined the path of development...Purvanchal Expressway was inaugurated by PM Modi in 2021," CM Yogi was quoted as saying by ABP Live.

According to the Times of India, this new route is designed to improve regional connectivity, ease congestion on existing roads, and offer faster travel.

The expressway directly serves four districts, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Azamgarh, by enhancing inter-district road links. This is expected to boost local trade, improve access to essential services, and create better economic opportunities.

Moreover, plans are in place to develop an industrial corridor along the expressway.

This corridor is expected to attract investments in agriculture, tourism, commerce, and manufacturing, potentially transforming the region into a thriving economic zone.

The expressway also emphasises sustainability. By cutting fuel consumption and reducing emissions through shorter travel times, it aligns with the state’s push for energy-efficient infrastructure.

It is also expected to enhance logistics connectivity between Eastern Uttar Pradesh and key markets, including the National Capital Region (NCR).
