Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Monday (6 October) remained calm after a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at him inside the Supreme Court during proceedings, reported Hindustan Times.

The CJI dismissed the incident, saying it did not bother him, and directed the court to continue the hearing.

“Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” he told the lawyers present in the courtroom.

The incident occurred while a bench led by CJI Gavai was hearing lawyers’ mentions of cases. Witnesses said a lawyer approached the dais, removed his shoe, and tried to hurl it toward the Chief Justice. Security officers quickly intervened, preventing the attack and escorting the man out of the courtroom.

As security personnel restrained him, the lawyer shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge" (We will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan).

The episode follows recent controversy over CJI Gavai’s remarks during a hearing on a plea seeking reconstruction of a seven-foot Lord Vishnu idol at the UNESCO-listed Javari Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. At the time, the CJI had remarked, “This is purely publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity himself to do something.”

Several Hindu groups accused him of mocking their faith. Responding to the criticism later, the Chief Justice clarified, “Someone told me the other day that the comments I made have been portrayed on social media in a certain manner... I respect all religions.”
