The Supreme Court on Monday (July 24) upheld a Calcutta High Court order directing an NIA probe into 6 FIRs regarding the violence thatoccurred during the Ram Navmi processions in West Bengal, earlier this year.

The Calcutta high court, on April 27, had directed the NIA to investigate the incidents of violence.

This order was made in response to a PIL filed by leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari and three other petitions requesting an NIA probe into the violence at these locations.

The party that had challenged the high court order argued that no explosives were used and claimed that the direction was based on a "politically-motivated" PIL filed by the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.

They had appealed to the apex court against the high court's decision.

However, the SC upheld the order directing an NIA probe into the violence against the Ram Navami Processions in the state.
