The South Central Railway (SCR) has begun the demolition of the main terminal buildings at Secunderabad Railway Station as part of Rs 720 crore redevelopment project.
The initiative aims to modernise the station into a world-class transit hub, addressing long-standing infrastructural deficiencies while enhancing passenger facilities, reported The New Indian Express.
Classified as a Non-Suburban Grade 1 (NSG1) station, Secunderabad Railway Station handles a daily footfall of 1.5 lakh passengers and 180 trains.
The redevelopment seeks to resolve multiple issues, including plumbing and congestion.
Officials emphasised the necessity of upgrading the facility.
“The old building had many plumbing and other issues," an official was quoted as saying by TNIE.
The new design will include iconic terminal buildings on both the northern and southern sides, each comprising G+3 floors with integrated passenger services.
A double-storey sky concourse will be constructed, featuring retail outlets, cafeterias, and other passenger-friendly amenities.
To ease congestion, multi-level parking will be developed on the northern side, while an underground parking facility will be built on the southern side.
Enhancing connectivity within the station, two 7.5 metre wide walkways equipped with travelators (moving walkways) will allow seamless movement between key sections.
The redevelopment is set to streamline passenger flow, minimise operational bottlenecks, and introduce a modern, sustainable design.
