AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
In a big setback to the Opposition INDI Alliance, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday that the party will go solo in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.
The announcement by Kejriwal comes as Delhi’s political landscape is heating up in the lead-up to elections expected early next year.
Several prominent leaders from AAP, Congress and BJP have already switched allegiances.
"AAP will have no alliance for assembly polls in Delhi," Kejriwal said in response to a question at a press conference, India Today reported.
The Delhi elections are likely to test AAP’s governance record against the BJP’s push to strengthen its foothold in the city-state.
AAP and Congress, both members of the INDIA bloc, had jointly contested the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi earlier this year but failed to win any seats, with the BJP sweeping the polls.
This is not the first instance of AAP distancing itself from the alliance.
Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal rejected a coalition with Congress in Punjab, declaring that AAP would contest all 13 seats independently.
The two parties also failed to negotiate a seat-sharing deal for the Haryana assembly elections.
