Sharjeel Imam Gets Bail In Inflammatory Speech Case, Will Remain In Jail For 2020 Delhi Riots Conspiracy

While the Delhi High Court on Wednesday (29 May) granted bail to Sharjeel Imam for allegedly making inflammatory speeches in the Jamia area of Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University, he will continue to remain in jail.

This is because the JNU scholar is also accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, the same case where another JNU alumni Umar Khalid was denied bail on Tuesday by a Delhi court.

A bench of justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain granted bail in a hate speech case where he was booked under charges of sedition and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The court had noted that after Imam's speeches, riots broke in Delhi on different dates and places causing violence, huge damage to public property and deaths, Bar and Bench reported.

Imam was arrested on 28 January 2020 following his speeches against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) and the riots occurred in February that year.
