Shimla Ropeway And Rapid Transport Project Secures Stage-I Environmental Clearance

The Himachal Pradesh government has received Stage-I environmental approval for a major ropeway and rapid transport development project in Shimla, valued at Rs 1,734.70 crore.
The announcement was made on Wednesday (15 October) by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri.
Spanning 13.79 km, the project is designed to ease traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and offer clean, efficient transport options for residents and tourists alike.
The nod has been granted under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, with the approval allowing the use of 6.1909 hectares of forest land.
Agnihotri emphasised that all development will strictly comply with environmental and legal regulations, PTI reported.
Speaking on the occasion, the deputy chief minister said, “In-principle approval has been granted for the use of 6.1909 hectares of forest land, with full compliance to all environmental and legal norms. The project would generate employment opportunities for the locals and provide tourists with a new and pleasant travel experience.”
Expressing gratitude to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Agnihotri emphasised the central role of environmental stewardship in project planning.
“Environmental protection remains a top priority of the state government. All construction activities would follow the guidelines of the forest department,” he added.
Once operational, the ropeway and rapid transport system is expected to redefine commuting in Shimla, providing a modern, eco-friendly alternative to road transport while supporting tourism and sustainable urban growth in the region.
