News Brief
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of India’s ODI team, replacing Rohit Sharma, the BCCI announced on Saturday (4 October), the India Today reported.
The decision was taken during a selection committee meeting chaired by Ajit Agarkar in Ahmedabad, where India’s ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming tour of Australia were also unveiled.
Rohit Sharma, who led India to Champions Trophy glory in February, has been retained in the ODI squad alongside former captain Virat Kohli.
Both players will be returning to competitive cricket for the first time since the 2025 IPL season.
“It’s practically impossible to have three different captains for the three formats in terms of planning and consistency. At some stage, you also have to look ahead to the next World Cup,” Agarkar said, shortly after India thrashed the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs in the first Test of a two-match series.
Shubman Gill, who earlier took over as Test captain after Rohit retired from the longest cricket format, is increasingly seen as a potential all-format leader.
Under his leadership, India drew 2-2 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, earning praise for his calm and strategic approach.
Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain.
India will play three ODIs between 19 and 25 October in Australia, followed by five T20Is from 29 October to 8 November.
Gill had also served as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy during the Asia Cup.
Rohit had earlier insisted he had no plans to retire from ODIs, saying, “Koi future plan ni hai… I’m not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward.”
