The Centre is working on the development of the Silchar-Saurashtra East-West Corridor, a 3,576.55 km long national highway project crucial to connectivity, commerce, and development of the region.
According to the government, over 97 per cent of the construction work on the corridor is completed.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that out of the 3,576.55 km long Silchar–Saurashtra East-West Corridor, 3,480.62 km has been completed, while 95.93 km is under implementation or bidding
The balance work of West Bengal and Assam was stalled because of pre-construction issues, including land acquisition, environmental and forest clearances, financial constraint faced by contractors, and force majeure.
These include streamlining and expediting the land acquisition process, revamping the Parivesh Portal to facilitate faster forest and environmental clearances, enabling online approval of General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) of Road Over Bridge/Road Under Bridge (ROB/RUB) from the Railways, and conducting review meetings at various levels with all stakeholders including the state governments.
The minister said that the revised scheduled date for completion of corridor is by June 2027.
When completed, the corridor will be an important gateway for the North-Eastern states and will improve connectivity to international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal.
