Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (23 February) launched a scathing attack against the Opposition, accusing them of disrespecting religious traditions and attempting to divide the society.
PM Modi's remarks came amid the ongoing criticism from several opposition leaders regarding the Maha Kumbh Mela, currently taking place in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, India Today reported.
Addressing a gathering in Madhya Pradesh's Chhattarpur, the Prime Minister criticised politicians who, he claimed, ridicule faith and cultural practices, describing them as people with a "slave mentality" who undermine India's religious heritage.
Speaking at an event in Madhya Pradesh's Chhattarpur, PM Modi accused certain politicians of mocking religious beliefs and traditions. He referred to them as individuals with a "slave mentality" who seek to weaken India's spiritual legacy.
"Nowadays, we see that there is a group of leaders who mock religion, ridicule it, are engaged in dividing people and many times foreign powers also try to weaken the country and religion by supporting these people," PM Modi said without taking any names.
"They dare to attack a religion and culture that has always been progressive in nature. Dividing our society and breaking its unity is their motive," he said.
"These people insult our festivals, traditions, and customs. They dare to malign a religion and culture that is inherently progressive. Their sole agenda is to divide and break our society," the Prime Minister added.
The Opposition has attacked Maha Kumbh lately while criticising the Uttar Pradesh government.
Lalu Yadav termed Maha Kumbh “meaningless", while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also weighed in on Maha Kumbh and alleged that there is no such thing as “Maha" Kumbh. He claimed that the BJP government in the state added the term to “waste money".
