Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has called for a unified opposition to the upcoming delimitation exercise, warning that the move could significantly erode the political influence of states that have successfully controlled population growth, as reported by The Indian Express.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to multiple Chief Ministers and former Chief Ministers on Thursday (6 March), Stalin framed the Union government’s delimitation plans as a direct attack on federalism.
Stalin expressed concern that the delimitation process, if conducted as per the post-2026 census, would unfairly reduce representation for states with effective family planning policies, while states with higher population growth stand to gain more seats.
Tamil Nadu, which currently holds 39 Lok Sabha seats, could see a reduction of up to eight seats, while states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar could gain significantly under a purely population-based allocation.
“The question is no longer if delimitation will happen, but when and whether it will honour the contributions of states that have advanced our national priorities,” Stalin cautioned, as quoted by The Indian Express.
This proposed alliance shall aim to coordinate opposition and formulate a collective strategy to prevent a disproportionate redistribution of parliamentary seats.
Stalin acknowledged that delimitation itself was inevitable but opposed its implementation in a manner that would undermine the federal character of the country.
He highlighted two possible scenarios—one where the 543 Lok Sabha seats are redistributed, and another where the total number of seats expands to over 800. Under both cases, he argued, states with stable population growth would lose influence, which he described as an unjust penalty for responsible governance.
Reiterating his stance at the 5 March all-party meeting, Stalin warned that if the Lok Sabha strength remains at 543, Tamil Nadu’s seats could shrink to 31. Even if the total seats are increased to 848, Tamil Nadu would only gain 10 seats, far short of the 22 needed to maintain proportional representation.
“The essence of India’s democracy rests on its federal character — a system that gives each State its rightful voice while honouring our sacred unity as one Nation,” Stalin wrote, urging immediate action before the delimitation process is finalised.
