Taking suo moto cognizance of the Kolkata rape and murder case, the Supreme Court has listed the matter for Tuesday (20 August).

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is set to hear the matter.

The Supreme Court's action comes days after the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) citing lapses in the probe by the West Bengal Police.

The 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found brutally murdered in the seminar hall of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on 9 August.

The medical fraternity has been protesting against the crime across the nation. A midnight mob attack happened at the RG Kar College amid peaceful protests. The court is likely to take note of it too.

The police released 76 photos of people allegedly involved in the vandalism and made 30 arrests. Among the arrestees, there are several Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers.

However, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India (Marxism) of vandalism.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has mandated all states to submit law and order reports every two hours amid widespread protests and public outrage.
