Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh
Air Chief Marshal AP Singh emphasised the urgent need to enhance India’s domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities, citing the rapid advancements made by China in both military platforms and technology.
Speaking at a seminar in the capital, the Air Chief called for a stronger role of private sector players to foster competition and boost innovation in the sector.
"I am very convinced that we need to get some private (sector) players. We need to have competition and we need to have multiple sources (of suppliers). So that people are wary of losing their orders. Otherwise, things will not change," the Air Chief remarked, indirectly addressing the current dominance of public sector enterprises in India’s aerospace industry.
Singh stressed that delays in research and development render technology obsolete, urging a shift in approach.
"Technology delayed is technology denied. There has to be an increased aptitude for acceptance of risks involved and failures in R&D," he said.
Highlighting India’s geopolitical challenges, Singh warned of limited support from friendly nations during crises.
The Air Chief acknowledged the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) own shortcomings in supporting indigenous efforts.
"I think all of us have been failing, in not being able to take us to that self-reliant state where we should have been today. We in uniform are no less responsible for this," he stated.
Singh outlined critical areas requiring immediate focus, including aero engines, airborne radars, beyond-visual-range missiles, sensors, unmanned combat aerial vehicles, hypersonic technology, and advanced metallurgy.
He also called for investment in advanced manufacturing processes to address current challenges and strengthen India’s aerospace capabilities.
