Mumbai Police on Friday (5 September) said it is on high alert after receiving a threat call claiming that 34 “human bombs” carrying “400 kg of RDX” had been planted in vehicles to trigger blasts that would “shake the entire city.”

The call was received on the traffic police helpline on the eve of Anant Chaturdashi, reported Hindustan Times.

The bomb threat, issued by an organisation called Lashkar-e-Jihadi, comes as Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations conclude, with the immersions (visarjan) beginning on Friday.

Police said the the threat message claimed that 34 cars carrying human bombs will be used to detonate 400 kg of RDX, killing one crore people.

In response, authorities intensified security checks across the state, with personnel deployed in large numbers for crowd management during the immersion of Ganesh idols.

The threat coincided with the massive turnout for visarjan processions, where lakhs of devotees gathered to bid farewell to the idols marking the end of the festival.

On Monday (1 September), police arrested Rupesh Madhukar Ranpise, 43, for falsely warning about a bomb at Kalwa railway station in Thane.

In August, ISKCON Temple in Girgaon received a threatening email, but Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad teams found nothing suspicious. The temple had received a similar hoax in September.

Earlier, on 25 July, a caller threatened an attack at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which also proved false after checks.
