The newly constructed land port in Sabroom, Tripura, is set to begin operations by early 2025, announced Aditya Mishra, Chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI).

Situated near the Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Gomati district, the strategically located facility is poised to transform regional trade and tourism. “The land port at Sabroom adjacent to Bangladesh is ready for operation,” stated Mishra.

He noted that the port was initially intended to open on 14 August 2024, but delays due to political circumstances in Bangladesh pushed the timeline. “We are hopeful it will be functional early next year,” he added.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 250 crore, the Sabroom Land Port is located next to Maitri Setu (Friendship Bridge), further enhancing its connectivity to Bangladesh.

The facility aims to facilitate seamless bilateral trade, leveraging its proximity to Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port, just 75 km away. It is also expected to boost cross-border tourism, creating opportunities for economic growth on both sides, reports Financial Express.

Mishra underlined the land port’s anticipated impact, saying, “This facility will not only boost trade but also create tourism opportunities for both nations.”

Significance Of Land Port

Enhanced Connectivity: Strategically positioned near key logistical routes, the land port is expected to streamline the movement of goods and services between India and Bangladesh.

Bilateral Trade Growth: Improved trade infrastructure could bolster economic ties, benefiting industries on both sides of the border.

Tourism Potential: The port’s accessibility to significant landmarks and its linkage with Maitri Setu may attract tourists, positioning the region as a cultural and commercial hub.

Although infrastructure is ready, the operational timeline hinges on resolving political considerations with Bangladesh. Once functional, the Sabroom Land Port will mark a significant milestone in India’s Act East policy, aiming to enhance regional cooperation and connectivity.

It also underscores India’s commitment to fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties with its neighbors.
