India–US ties continue to remain at an impasse, with recent reports indicating Trump administration’s out of touch grasp of India’s political priorities and strategic sensitivities.

According to a Washington Post report, senior White House officials, including Ricky Gill, the US National Security Council’s Senior Director for South and Central Asia, were in New Delhi last week, during which Gill dined with former Indian diplomats.

During the meeting, Indian officials, voiced frustration over the derailment of trade talks and were angry with Trump’s repeated claims of having brokered a “FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE” in the India-Pakistan confrontation, a claim flatly rejected by India.

New Delhi maintains the truce was the result of direct military talks, not US mediation.

Gill sought to reassure former Indian diplomats of America’s commitment, but noted frustration within the White House over India’s insistence on downplaying US involvement in ending the May conflict with Pakistan.

According to the sources cited in the report, the former diplomats were allegedly “surprised” by this question as India has consistently maintained that its long-standing disputes with Pakistan, must be addressed bilaterally.

Recent moves have worsened tensions. Washington’s imposition of fifty per cent tariffs on Indian exports, framed as punishment for Russian oil purchases, drew sharp criticism from New Delhi, which called the measures “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”

PM Modi has publicly vowed to resist any trade deal harming agriculture, dairy or fishing, even at personal political cost, while signalling closer ties with BRICS, including planned engagements with Beijing and Moscow.
