María Corina Machado
Maria Corina Machado, Venezuela’s opposition leader, dedicated her Nobel Peace Prize to both the people of Venezuela and US President Donald Trump, acknowledging his “decisive support” for the nation’s pro-democracy movement, NDTV reported.
"I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!" she wrote on X.
"We are on the threshold of victory, and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy," she added.
Machado has been in hiding for the past year following elections widely viewed as fraudulent, allegedly stolen by President Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian regime.
Barred from contesting the election, Machado supported her proxy candidate, former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, recognised by much of the international community as the legitimate victor.
The Nobel committee commended Machado as a “brave and committed champion of peace” who “keeps the flame of democracy burning during a growing darkness”.
The 2025 Nobel Committee faced unusual global attention following an aggressive public and behind-the-scenes campaign led by Donald Trump.
Machado has expressed support for Trump’s continued military pressure on Maduro, including the recent US naval deployment near Venezuela, calling it a “necessary measure” toward restoring democracy.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt amplified Machado’s message by sharing her dedication post on X.
Venezuelan opposition figures, including former presidential contender Henrique Capriles, congratulated Machado on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
"May this recognition be another boost to achieve PEACE and for our Venezuela to leave behind the suffering and recover the freedom and democracy for which it has fought for so many years," Capriles wrote on X.
