Trump, Putin Hold Ukraine Ceasefire Talks; Agree To Halt Strikes On Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure And Exchange Prisoners

United States (US) President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held a lengthy phone call on Tuesday (18 March), agreeing to an immediate pause on strikes against energy infrastructure in Ukraine, reported The Hindu.

The White House described the conversation as a “movement to peace”, though the Kremlin emphasised that Russia has additional demands before considering a broader ceasefire.

The White House statement highlighted that both leaders agreed on the need for peace and a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Trump and Putin discussed a halt to strikes on energy infrastructure, alongside technical negotiations on a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea.

The statement also noted that the leaders stressed the importance of improved US-Russia relations, citing potential economic and strategic benefits.

Additionally, as a gesture of goodwill, 23 wounded Ukrainian servicemen undergoing treatment in Russian medical institutions will be handed over.

Trump proposed a 30-day mutual halt on attacks against energy infrastructure, a move that Putin responded positively to, instructing the Russian military accordingly.

The statements noted that both leaders shared the view that Iran should never be in a position to destroy Israel. 

Additionally, Trump supported Putin’s proposal for hockey matches between Russian and American players from the NHL and KHL, with both sides agreeing to remain in contact on all issues raised.
