US President Donald Trump sparked global attention on Thursday (5 September) after posting a cryptic remark on his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring that the United States has “lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China.”
“Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!," he said in the post.
The post comes as India is trying to negotiate a trade deal with the US.
The post included an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This comes as the Trump administration has escalated its trade dispute with India by imposing steep 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods—consisting of a 25 per cent “reciprocal” levy and an additional 25 per cent penalty linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
Many former US officials, including former NSAs Jake Sullivan and John Bolton have slammed Trump for imposing tariffs on India and damaging the ties with New Delhi.
Sullivan described the shift as one of the least reported aspects of Trump’s foreign policy and welcomed that it was being highlighted.
According to Sullivan, the fallout would not only affect New Delhi but also damage America’s credibility among allies. Other nations, he cautioned, could interpret the move as proof they cannot rely on the US.
