United States President Donald Trump has ordered troops to deploy in Chicago after a federal agent shot an allegedly armed motorist on Saturday (4 October), while a judge blocked his attempt to send military forces to Portland, another Democratic-led city, reported NDTV.

The escalating nationwide crisis reflects Trump’s intensified militarised anti-crime and migration strategy, which Democrats condemn as an authoritarian power grab.

“President Trump has authorized 300 national guardsmen to protect federal officers and assets” in Chicago, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said, after weeks of Trump threatening troop deployment despite local opposition.

“President Trump will not turn a blind eye to the lawlessness plaguing American cities," Jackson added.

Portland and Chicago now join Los Angeles and Washington as focal points of Trump’s military raids.

Trump has called Portland “war-ravaged” with rampant violence, but US District Judge Karin Immergut rejected this, saying the President’s decision “was simply untethered to the facts.”

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden praised the ruling: “The victory supports what Oregonians already know: we don’t need or want Donald Trump to provoke violence by deploying federal troops in our state.”

According to DHS, Chicago agents, “boxed in by 10 cars,” exited their vehicles when one driver—armed with a semi-automatic weapon—rammed them.

“Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen,” said DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

The injured motorist “drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.”
