Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday (22 August) announced the launch of the Smart-Developed Municipality Scheme aimed at transforming all district headquarters in the state into modern, citizen-centric municipalities, The Indian Express reported.

Chairing a review meeting of the Urban Development Department, the CM said the scheme would build self-reliant and smart municipalities.

According to the officials cited in the IE report, under the scheme, the municipalities will be equipped with pink toilets, smart classrooms, anganwadis, urban facility centres, heritage conservation projects, EV charging stations, green crematoriums, reservoir revival systems, theme parks, and digital services.

Utsav bhawans and structures linked to the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme will also be developed to support local economies.

The plan includes adopting a hub-and-spoke model where municipalities near major cities such as Lucknow and Gorakhpur will be connected to integrated command centres for better monitoring, security, grievance redressal, and resource use.

In the meeting, a proposal was presented to operate 200 electric buses on the Lucknow–Kanpur route under a net cost contract model, along with the direct purchase of 650 buses for other cities.

The Chief Minister also gave directions for the speedy resolution of discrepancies in municipal tax arrears.

He further ordered expansion of municipal financial powers, creation of dedicated municipal buildings, and priority development of a new shooting range and sports complex in Lucknow.
