The United States of America (USA) has reportedly started an inquiry into the leak of sensitive documents that revealed Israel’s military preparation for a potential strike on Iran.
Three American officials confirmed the investigation to The Associated Press, while another indicated the documents are likely genuine.
The leaked documents, reportedly from the US Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency (NSA), outline Israel's current deployment of military assets in preparation for a potential counterstrike after Iran’s ballistic missile attack on 1 October.
The leaked documents were shared among the “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing alliance, which includes the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
Originally shared on Telegram and later covered by CNN and Axios, the documents bear a "top secret" classification.
US officials reportedly confirmed the details to the media.
Additionally, investigators will determine if any other classified information was compromised and who had access to the documents before their release.
This leak surfaces at a sensitive moment, as the US has been urging Israel to tone down its military actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
The US has suggested to Israel that, with Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar now out of the picture, Israel could push for a ceasefire in Gaza.
At the same time, Washington has warned Israel about the dangers of expanding its military operations in Lebanon, fearing it could ignite a larger regional conflict.
However, Israeli leaders have made it clear they won’t let Iran’s recent missile attack go unanswered, despite the U' concerns.
