Uttar Pradesh: Excavation Of Ancient "Mrityu Kup" Begins In Sambhal Amid Drive To Restore Religious Wells And Sites

The district administration in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has initiated the renovation and excavation of the ancient "Mrityu Kup" at Kot Purvi, within the Sambhal Kotwali police station area. This effort is part of a larger initiative to identify and restore wells of significant religious and spiritual importance.

Locals say the well, abandoned and filled with debris for several years, is a historic and sacred site. They believe bathing in its waters can lead to salvation.

"Thursday marks the beginning of the excavation of the Mrityu Kup, a very ancient and revered site. The excavation is being carried out with the cooperation of the Nagar Palika," said local councillor Gagan Varshney.

The well, deeply embedded in the region’s spiritual heritage, is expected to boost religious tourism in Sambhal. Officials believe its restoration will attract more visitors and highlight the area's cultural significance.

The "Mrityu Kup" is located near the Shahi Jama Masjid, which was the site of a court-ordered survey last month that resulted in violence, leaving four people dead. Despite this, the renovation project has proceeded smoothly, with local authorities emphasizing its importance to the community’s cultural and religious fabric.

The district administration, in collaboration with the Nagar Palika, is committed to ensuring the successful restoration of this ancient landmark, which holds great cultural and spiritual value for the people of the region.
