On Monday (8 July), terrorists in a cowardly attack, ambushed an army vehicle in the Billawar region of Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district. Five Indian Army soldiers lost their lives, all from Uttarakhand — two from Pauri, two from Tehri, and one from Rudraprayag.

The fallen soldiers include Rifleman Adarsh Negi, Naik Vinod Singh, Naib Subedar Anand Singh Rawat, Havaldar Kamal Singh and Anuj Negi. Here's a brief profile of the 22 Garhwal Rifles soldiers:

1. Adarsh Negi

Rifleman Adarsh Negi, aged 26, was a resident of Thati Dagar village in the Kirtinagar block of Tehri district.

His father, Dalbir Singh Negi, is a farmer in the same village. Adarsh completed his education up to Class XII at Government Inter College Piplidhar.

He joined the Garhwal Rifles in 2019 while in his second year of a BSc programme at Garhwal University.

2. Vinod Singh

Naik Vinod Singh from Tehri Garhwal district also lost his life in the Kathua terrorist attack.

Vinod Singh hailed from Chaund Jaspur village in the Jakhnidhar taluk. His family resides in Bhaniyawala, Dehradun.

Naib Subedar Anand Singh Rawat, a resident of Kandakhal in Rudraprayag district and aged 41, has left his family in deep mourning.

While his family resides in Dehradun, his mother and brother continue to live in their village in Rudraprayag.

4. Kamal Singh and Anuj Negi

Havildar Kamal Singh and Rifleman Anuj Negi from Pauri district were also among the soldiers martyred in the Kathua attack.

Havildar Kamal Singh hailed from Papri village in Lansdowne tehsil, while Rifleman Anuj Negi was a resident of Dobaria village in Rikhnikhal taluk.

Their deaths have left their villages in deep mourning and shock.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has condemned the attack.

“The news of five soldiers being martyred in a terrorist attack on an army convoy in Kathua (J&K) is extremely painful. I condemn this cowardly attack and can say with full confidence that these enemies of humanity will not be spared. I pray to God to give peace to the souls of the departed and strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense pain and for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Dhami said in a post on X Monday.
