News Brief

The transport department has appointed a vendor to handle the collection of the green tax.
The Uttarakhand government will start collecting a green tax from vehicles entering the state from other regions starting December, in a bid to curb pollution, safeguard the environment, and maintain cleanliness, reported PTI.
State Additional Transport Commissioner Sanat Kumar Singh reportedly said that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at state borders will record the registration numbers of incoming vehicles.
Sixteen cameras were already installed in the border areas, and their number has now been increased to 37, he added.
The transport department has appointed a vendor to handle the collection of the green tax.
Singh explained that data captured by the cameras will be transmitted to the vendor via specialised software, which will filter out vehicles registered in Uttarakhand, government vehicles, and two-wheelers.
The information will then be sent to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) database.
The green tax rates vary according to vehicle type.
Small passenger vehicles will be charged Rs 80, small cargo vehicles Rs 250, buses Rs 140, while trucks will be taxed between Rs 120 and Rs 700 depending on their weight.
The automated system is expected to ensure seamless collection and minimal human intervention, while simultaneously encouraging compliance and contributing to the state’s environmental goals.
