Madurai is bracing for a political spectacle today as actor-turned-politician Vijay convenes the second state conference of his party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).

The event, being portrayed as a massive show of strength, is being staged on a sprawling 500 acre site along the Madurai–Thoothukudi highway in Kariyapatti taluk, where organisers anticipate a turnout of nearly four lakh people.

The conference marks a decisive moment for TVK as Vijay positions himself as a new force in Tamil Nadu politics, distancing the party from both the DMK and BJP.

By invoking the legacy of Dravidian stalwarts such as CN Annadurai and MGR, the actor has sought to project himself as the future leader of Tamil Nadu.

Cutouts of Vijay alongside Annadurai and MGR have been erected across Madurai, highlighting the symbolism of the event.

In a message to his cadres, Vijay likened the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections to landmark political contests of the past. He wrote that the poll would be “historic”, drawing comparisons with the decisive elections of 1967 and 1977, according to a report by One India.

Stressing the importance of the Madurai conference, he said it would showcase TVK’s vision of “Conscience Democracy” and its broader political direction.

For the TVK, today’s gathering is both a demonstration of organisational muscle and a test of whether Vijay can translate his vast fan following into a durable political base.
