The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has completed the construction of India’s longest cantilever glass bridge, a striking new addition to the city’s tourism landscape.

Built at a cost of Rs 7 crore, the 55 metre structure is set to open to visitors on 25 September and is expected to become a landmark attraction for Andhra Pradesh, The New Indian Express reported.

VMRDA Chairman MV Pranav Gopal said the project underscores the coalition government’s push under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to expand tourism infrastructure in the coastal city.

Several tourism projects have been initiated in Visakhapatnam, he noted, adding that the foundation stone for the Trishul Project atop Kailasagiri was recently laid.

The 55 foot trident will be made of Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP), chosen for its durability and ability to withstand strong coastal winds. Estimated at Rs 5.5 crore, the installation is expected to become another cultural landmark.

The glass bridge surpasses Kerala’s 38 metre Vagamon Glass Bridge in length and has been built with imported German panels comprising three layers of tempered laminated glass, 40mm thick.

Tourists walking across the bridge will be treated to sweeping views of the Bay of Bengal and the city’s skyline.

Metropolitan Commissioner KS Viswanathan remarked that the bridge will become a landmark for Vizag, emphasising the strong public enthusiasm for recent tourism initiatives.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the coast, Kailasagiri, famous for its large statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is itself is a popular destination, renowned for its verdant gardens, ropeway rides, and panoramic vistas of the city and sea.
