Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reiterated that India will not rush into trade agreements under external pressure, emphasising that the country’s approach is guided by national interest and long-term strategy, the India Today reported.
Speaking at the Berlin Dialogue in Germany, Goyal said, “We are in active dialogue with the EU. We are talking to the US, but we do not do deals in a hurry, and we do not do deals with deadlines or with a gun to our head.”
The Minister highlighted that India is engaging with key global partners to strengthen trade partnerships, while making clear that speed will not come at the cost of national priorities.
“India never takes decisions in a rush or in the heat of the moment,” he said, adding that trade agreements must be evaluated with a long-term perspective rather than short-term gains.
Amid high tariffs and shifting global trade dynamics, Goyal noted that India is exploring newer markets to safeguard its exporters.
He further emphasised that India’s trade partnerships are built on mutual respect, and the country will not accept being told who it can or cannot trade with.
Goyal’s remarks come amid reports of US pressure on India to stop buying crude oil from Russia.
By asserting that India will pursue deals that align with its long-term interests, Goyal reiterated that the country prioritises what works best for its people and economy.
