News Brief
Ravneet Singh Bittu joins BJP
Congress MP from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (26 March). He is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Anandpur Sahib in 2009 and then in 2014 and 2019 from Ludhiana. He was also the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha for a few months in 2021 when Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was away.
On joining the BJP, Bittu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, party national president JP Nadda and national general secretary Vinod Tawde and pledged to work for Punjab.
He also praised BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) work during the disturbed period of Punjab to reinstate peace. He also targeted Akali Dal for going back on farm laws.
This comes after Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar announced earlier in the day that the party will contest solo in the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for 1 June.
Another Congress MP from Punjab, Preneet Kaur joined BJP earlier in the month. Kaur is a four-time Congress MP from Patiala and wife of former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh.
