US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (28 January) expressed confidence that India would take the “right action” regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants.
His remarks came after a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral and global issues, The Indian Express reported.
“Discussed immigration with Modi. India will do what is right when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants,” Reuters quoted Trump as saying.
He also revealed that Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit the United States “sometime in February,” although the Ministry of External Affairs in India has not confirmed this yet.
Prime Minister Modi shared his perspective on the conversation via X, expressing optimism about the deepening partnership between the two nations.
The dialogue between the leaders focused on strengthening US-India ties, with discussions on enhancing cooperation in defence, trade, and regional security.
Trump emphasised the importance of India increasing its purchase of American-made defence equipment and fostering a more balanced trade relationship.
Key regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe, were also addressed during the conversation. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Indo-Pacific Quad alliance, highlighting India’s pivotal role in the region.
The White House statement highlighted the “strong friendship and strategic ties” between the United States and India. It also noted that India will host the Quad Leaders’ Summit for the first time later this year, a significant step in bolstering regional cooperation.
