Mumbai Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday (14 August) inaugurated the Mumbai Dabbawala International Experience Centre, calling it a “landmark moment” in preserving and showcasing the city’s unique heritage, the Indian Express reported.

The dabbawalas, Mumbai’s iconic tiffin delivery workers, serve lakhs of office-goers daily, navigating the city with a remarkable accuracy rate.

Fadnavis highlighted that their system relies on teamwork, a coded system, and a combination of bicycles, trains, and walking without the use of computers or AI.

“The historic Dabbawala Bhavan has been beautifully transformed into a world-class experience centre where every visitor can step into the 135-year legacy of the Dabbawalas. Through modern technology and virtual reality, it is possible to witness the journey of each tiffin from local kitchens to delivery across the city,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

He highlighted their unwavering discipline, saying they take leave only once a year during the Wari, in keeping with the Warkari tradition.

This, he said, reflects generations of dedication, discipline, and service that leave a lasting impression on anyone who witnesses it.

The Chief Minister also said the state government was working to improve the dabbawalas’ living conditions by providing modern housing and better amenities, well-connected to suburban railways, to ensure their essential work continues smoothly.

According to him, the new experience centre is both a tribute to their extraordinary service and a celebration of Mumbai’s spirit, representing the perfect blend of tradition and innovation.
