Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has approved the appointment of Manoj Kumar Singh as the new Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

Singh, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1988 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, will succeed the long-serving Durga Shanker Mishra, who is from the 1984 batch of the same cadre.

Durga Shanker Mishra, previously serving as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development at the centre, was repatriated to his home state on 29 December 2021, just two days before his retirement, and was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh.

Mishra's appointment at the brink of retirement surprised many as it was believed to be unprecedented in the country.

However, he did not receive a fourth extension this time, leading to Singh's appointment.

Manoj Kumar Singh, originally from Ranchi, Jharkhand, is regarded as one of the most influential bureaucrats in Uttar Pradesh. Singh is set to retire in July 2025.

He currently holds control over several key departments and has held significant responsibilities as additional chief secretary for Panchayati Raj and horticulture and food processing.
