Yogi Adityanath's One District, One Medical College Initiative Progresses: Five More Approved, 1200 MBBS Seats Added In Year

The Union Health Ministry has granted approval for starting MBBS courses at five newly established medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh (UP). These are in Gonda Kaushambi, Chandauli, Kheri and Auraiya.

Additionally, the seat capacity at the medical colleges in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur has been doubled, from 50 to 100. Earlier, the Yogi Adityanath government had applied for 13 new medical colleges.

At that time only seven new medical colleges in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kanpur Dehat, Kushinagar, Lalitpur, Sultanpur and Pilibhit got approval with 100 MBBS seats allotted to five of them, while Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur Medical Colleges were initially assigned 50 seats each.

With the latest addition of 600 seats, the total number of MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh has now reached 11,200, comprising 5,150 seats in government medical colleges and 6,050 in private institutions.

Following discussions between Chief Minister Adityanath and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the principals of these colleges submitted an appeal to the National Medical Commission (NMC), which ultimately led to the recognition of these seven institutions.

The state government is pursuing a "one district, one medical college" initiative, with 14 additional colleges set to open soon. Currently, there are 70 medical colleges across the state, although some districts already have more than one.
