In a bid to strengthen and rejuvenate the police force, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government has decided to introduce mandatory retirement for police personnel aged above 50.

The screening process for this has already begun.

Officers who reach the age of 50 by 30 March 2023, will undergo a comprehensive evaluation of their track record. This assessment will determine their eligibility for compulsory retirement.

The criteria for this evaluation will include the officer's efficiency, character, ability, evaluations, and behaviour towards the public, as reflected in their Annual Confidential Report (ACR).

ADG Establishment, Sanjay Singhal, has issued directives to all IG Ranges, ADG Zones, the seven Police Commissioners, and all police departments regarding this decision.

By 30 November, after a thorough review of their track records, a decision will be made on the compulsory retirement of these officers.

Additionally, the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) has been instructed to submit their list of officers meeting these criteria by 20 November.

It has been reported that officers with a history of corruption and misconduct will also face retirement as a punitive measure.

Moreover, the government has also resolved to dismiss officers and personnel previously rejected from the police force.

To facilitate decisions in this regard, the ADG Establishment has sought the track records of these officers.

This move is not unprecedented. In recent years, the Yogi government has enforced compulsory retirement for hundreds of police officers to enhance the efficiency of the UP Police.

CM Yogi recently highlighted that officers or employees lacking decision-making abilities would be replaced. In contrast, competent and promising officers will be given more responsibilities to refine the operational style of the UP Police.
