In a unanimous resolution passed during its board meeting on Monday (23 June), the Agra Zila Panchayat has proposed renaming Fatehabad town to Sindoorpuram and the Badshahi Bagh area within it to Brahmapuram, PTI reported.

The move, initiated by Zila Panchayat chairperson Manju Bhadoria, now awaits clearance from the Uttar Pradesh state government.

Bhadoria stated that the current names were relics of “slavery” and therefore inappropriate in a modern, self-governing India.

The proposal advocated for the name changes as the names symbolised slavery, she remarked during the session.

Fatehabad, which lies in the Agra district, was historically known as Samugarh, a name it bore prior to being renamed by later rulers.

Further, the proposal called for the renaming of the Badshahi Bagh area as Brahmapuram, linking the new name both to Lord Brahma, the main deity in Hindu scripture, and the BrahMos missile, a symbol of Indian defence capability.

It also suggested that Badshahi Bagh area in Fatehabad could be renamed as Brahmapuram after the Brahmos missile and Lord Brahma, the proposal read.

The proposal is now being forwarded to the state government for review and approval.
