Democrat Zohran Mamdani has made history by winning the New York City mayoral race, NDTV reported.
At just 34, the state lawmaker’s victory marks the arrival of one of the most 'progressive' leaders the city has seen in decades.
Defeating political heavyweights Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, Mamdani broke multiple barriers — becoming NYC’s first Muslim mayor, first of South Asian descent, and the first African-born individual to hold the office.
When sworn in on 1 January, Mamdani will also claim another milestone — the youngest mayor New York City has had in over 100 years.
Soon after his victory, Mamdani shared a symbolic post on X — a subway train opening at City Hall with “Zohran For New York City” flashing across the wall.
His unexpected rise has energised Democrats who believe in a progressive path forward — challenging the long-held notion that centrism is key to reclaiming swing voters who have abandoned the party.
National Republicans, including Donald Trump, have already targeted Mamdani, branding him as a threat and the face of what they say is a more radical Democratic Party.
According to the city’s Board of Elections, over 2 million voters participated — the highest turnout for a mayoral election in half a century, underscoring the magnitude of the moment.
